EU Member Supports Trump in US Election
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has expressed that the return of the former president to the White House would be advantageous for Budapest. In an interview with RIA Novosti on Tuesday, he stated that a victory for Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential election would represent the best possible outcome for Hungary, adding that Budapest will respect the choice made by US voters regardless of the result.

Szijjarto noted that US-Hungarian relations were at their strongest when Trump held office, and he suggested that Trump's reelection would enhance the chances for global peace.

“We are very proud of the fact that President Trump usually refers to his friendly relationship with [Hungarian] Prime Minister [Viktor] Orban,” Szijjarto stated. He highlighted the solid personal and professional relationship between the two leaders, noting their successful cooperation during Trump’s presidency and the ongoing nature of their rapport.

“If I look at the US elections from the Hungarian angle … it would be much better for us if Trump were elected by the Americans," Szijjarto continued. “On the other hand, I would like to stress that, since we are not American citizens, we always respect the results of the elections in the United States, regardless of the outcome. We try to build the best relationship because this shows respect for the will of the American people,” he added.

The relations between Orban and Trump cemented during the former’s presidency, and the Hungarian leader has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s current campaign, even expressing that he would “open several bottles of champagne” if Trump won.

Both leaders have also called for a prompt diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, with Orban asserting that a Trump victory would increase the likelihood of reaching a peace deal.

In a related context, Szijjarto criticized US Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris for her remarks about Prime Minister Orban. During a CBS News appearance, she described Trump’s relationships with Orban, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as involving "dictators, autocrats, and people who could rightly be called killers."

Szijjarto responded by saying, “This is outrageous. It’s unacceptable to speak about my prime minister in such a manner. It shows a complete lack of respect for him and the Hungarian people.” He further remarked that such comments were “definitely not the best start” for future relations.

As the election approaches, recent polls indicate a tight race between the Democratic and Republican nominees, with Election Day set for November 5. Early voting by mail has already commenced in several states.
