EU foreign ministers organize collective visit to US – Politico
The foreign ministers of France, Germany, and Poland are reportedly planning a joint visit to the United States to convey a message of unity, according to PMG EU.

The trip is still in the early stages of planning with no confirmed date, but the ministers aim to arrive shortly after the January 20 inauguration of President Donald Trump, as shared by three EU diplomats who spoke anonymously on Wednesday.

Jean-Noel Barrot from France, Annalena Baerbock from Germany, and Radoslaw Sikorski from Poland may potentially be joined by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, according to two of the diplomats involved.

The purpose of the visit, as indicated by one of the diplomats, would be to demonstrate a “show of European unity.”

The EU has faced challenges in responding to Trump’s comments regarding the US interest in Greenland, an Arctic island that is currently an autonomous territory of Denmark. The Danish government has firmly rejected the idea of selling the island and stated that it would be unacceptable for the US to forcibly take it from a fellow NATO ally.

“There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be, attack its sovereign borders,” Barrot told France Inter radio.

The European Commission, on the other hand, has not taken a stance on the matter.

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that Trump will not be able to quickly resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, advocating for Washington's role to be one of facilitating dialogue with Moscow.

Barrot, who has served as France’s foreign minister since September, is a remnant of Michel Barnier’s cabinet, which lost parliamentary confidence in early December. Meanwhile, Baerbock is part of Germany’s 'traffic light' coalition, which collapsed in November, leading to an upcoming general election in February.

The Polish government, which came to power in December 2023 through coalition-building, is led by Sikorski, who previously stirred controversy while in opposition by tweeting “Thank you, USA” following the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines, which had been a key conduit for Russian gas to Germany.

This week, Trump also increased tensions among European NATO members by stating that their military spending levels were insufficient. Up to 15 members of the bloc have not met the target of 2% of their GDP by mid-2024. According to the president-elect, even that benchmark falls short, insisting that member nations should aim for a spending level of at least 5%, which none are currently able to meet.
