China affirms commitment to dialogue for resolving EV tariff conflict with EU
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday that China is dedicated to settling the disagreement with the European Union concerning Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in the European market through dialogue.
Speaking to reporters, spokesperson Lin Jian mentioned that China has put forward various adaptable options to settle the disagreement. Despite this, the EU has consistently dismissed these proposals without presenting any concrete alternative, claiming a readiness to solve the issues through discussion.
"The anti-subsidy investigation against Chinese EVs initiated by the European Commission is a typical act of protectionism and political maneuvering," Lin stated.
Lin criticized the EU's investigation approach, highlighting that it neglects actual facts, overlooks World Trade Organization regulations, contradicts historical movements, and could potentially hinder both the EU's own green initiatives and worldwide climate action efforts.
From July 5, 2024, the EU decided to impose preliminary additional tariffs that vary between 17.4 percent and 37.6 percent on imported Chinese EVs. This imposition is part of a temporary measure that precedes a final decision regarding permanent duties to be established within four months from that date.
Lin expressed a desire for the EU to genuinely engage and reflect on the justifiable worries and propositions made by the Chinese EV sector.
"If the European Commission insists on its unilateral approach, China will take necessary measures to firmly defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese businesses and industries," Lin warned.
