Biden States Secret Service "needs more help"
The president urged Congress to take action in response.
As Biden departed the White House, he commented on the incident, stating the need for increased support a day after Secret Service agents intercepted a gunman near Trump’s Florida golf course while the former president was there. “One thing I want to make clear is: The Service needs more help. And I think Congress should respond to their need,” Biden said.
The president also mentioned that it would be up to the Secret Service to "decide whether they need more personnel or not."
In response, Speaker Mike Johnson, in a “Fox & Friends” interview, highlighted the necessity to ensure Trump's safety. He asserted that the former president should "have every asset available" for his protection, adding that additional resources might be required, though he noted that it may not be a "funding issue."
“President Trump needs the most coverage of anyone. He’s the most attacked. He’s the most threatened,” Johnson stated, attributing it to "man-power allocation."
This heightened concern for Trump's safety follows a July incident at a Trump campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where a gunman, armed with an automatic weapon, attacked from a nearby rooftop, injuring the former president and others.
The incident led to significant criticism of the Secret Service, culminating in the resignation of its director. Following these events, Biden approved enhanced security measures for both Trump and the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, who both condemned the attack.
“Thank God the president is ok,” Biden remarked regarding the recent Florida incident.
Authorities reported that after a firearm was spotted on the West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was present, agents responded by shooting, leading to the arrest of suspect Ryan Wesley Routh. An arraignment for Routh was anticipated to occur on Monday.
