US President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the man set to succeed him, had a phone call last week during the Thanksgiving holiday, according to NBC on Saturday, citing two sources familiar with the discussion. This marked their first direct communication since Trump's visit to the White House on November 13.
As reported by NBC, the Republican president-elect contacted Biden to extend Thanksgiving wishes. The conversation was described as brief and “not substantive.”
Biden made the decision to forgo a second term campaign over the summer after facing a poor debate performance against Trump. The Republican candidate won decisively against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the recent election.
Following the election, the two men met at the White House and shared a handshake for the cameras. During the meeting, Biden expressed his anticipation for a “peaceful transition,” to which the president-elect replied that the transition would be “smooth as you can get.”
Both parties have frequently accused each other of promoting hateful rhetoric and demonization. Trump has labeled Biden an “enemy of the state,” a weak leader lacking respect from foreign leaders, and someone who does not possess the competence required for the presidency.
On the other hand, Biden has referred to Trump supporters as “garbage” and accused Trump of attempting to seize power through “political violence,” drawing comparisons of his predecessor’s language to that of “Nazi Germany” and deeming him a threat to democracy.
Following his loss in the 2020 US election, Trump opted out of the traditional invitation to the White House. He also chose not to attend Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, a historic move making him the first outgoing US president to skip the swearing-in ceremony of his successor in 150 years.
Trump's inauguration is set for January 20. Before the election, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden intends to attend the ceremony, regardless of the outcome.
Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden celebrated this Thanksgiving in Nantucket, Massachusetts, with family, including the president’s son Hunter and their daughter Ashley. Recently, Biden pardoned Hunter for federal crimes he was convicted of, as well as for any offenses he may have committed since 2014. The unusually broad nature of the pardon has faced significant criticism from Trump and even some members of Biden's own party.
