In a phone conversation with Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed on Saturday, Assad emphasized that “Syria continues to defend its stability and territorial integrity in the face of all terrorists,” according to a statement released by his office.
Assad further noted that “is capable, with the help of its allies and friends, of defeating and eliminating them no matter how intense their terrorist attacks are,” as detailed in the readout.
On Wednesday, the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS), previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, along with allied militias, launched assaults on government-controlled regions in northern Syria, violating a fragile ceasefire brokered by Russia and Türkiye back in 2020. By Friday, HTS combatants had entered Aleppo, a city held by the Syrian government since 2016.
The Syrian General Command reported on Saturday that the assault was “supported by thousands of foreign terrorists, heavy weapons, and a large number of drones,” resulting in significant casualties among Syrian Army personnel who were defending Aleppo.
While Syrian government forces managed to avert the complete fall of Aleppo, they have retreated from the city to organize a counteroffensive, according to the General Command. Unofficial reports on social media indicate that Syrian forces are beginning to arrive in Hama, approximately 80 kilometers south of Aleppo, in preparation for this response.
As jihadists continue their advance on Hama, sporadic clashes have erupted on the city’s outskirts, as reported by Turkish media on Saturday. Iranian military advisors and volunteers have also been reported to have arrived in Hama to support the Syrian military, according to various pro- and anti-Assad Telegram channels.
Sheikh Mohammed expressed to Assad that the UAE “stands with the Syrian state and supports it in combating terrorism and extending its sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability,” as per the statement from Assad’s office.
Iran has declared its intention to issue a “serious” response to HTS following the group’s attack on its consulate in Aleppo, which resulted in the death of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Major General Kiyumars Pourhashemi earlier this week. Meanwhile, Russia, which has been militarily involved in Syria since 2015, has launched airstrikes against jihadist targets, reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least 600 militants since Thursday, according to Colonel Oleg Ignasyuk, the deputy head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.
