2025's Initial Cold Wave Anticipated to Impact Much of China
China is preparing for its first cold wave of 2025, which is anticipated to impact a majority of the country.
Xu Jun, the chief forecaster at the Central Meteorological Observatory, emphasized that this cold spell will lead to significant temperature fluctuations alongside powerful winds.
According to Xu, temperatures across much of the country are expected to decrease by 8-12 degrees Celsius, with certain regions in northwestern and northern China seeing drops of over 14 degrees Celsius.
These regions will also face strong winds, with eastern and southern coastal areas likely to experience similar conditions later in the week.
The cold wave is arriving at the height of the Spring Festival travel period.
Tian Hua, chief expert at the Public Meteorological Service Center of the China Meteorological Administration, highlighted that on January 24, heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions will affect the eastern part of northwest China, creating high risks of snow accumulation and ice on major highways such as Lianhuo, Jingkun, Fuyin, and Erguang in Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Henan provinces.
January 25 is projected to be the day of the cold wave's most extensive impact, with snow or sleet affecting the northwest, northern China, the western Huanghuai region, and southwestern areas, causing significant disruptions to transportation.
Tian noted that on January 26 and 27, the primary impact of snow and rain will affect transportation in the northeast and southwest regions.
Heavy snowfall or blizzard conditions could lead to substantial snow accumulation and heightened risks of road icing on highways such as Daguang, Danxi, and Suiman in Inner Mongolia and the northeastern provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.
