Authorities in Australia have noted a rise in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide in recent weeks.
In a similar incident in Melbourne last Friday, police are currently searching for three suspects involved in an arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue.
In response to this series of attacks, officials have launched a special task force named Operation Avalite, aimed at combating anti-Semitism and intensifying patrols in Jewish communities, including around schools and synagogues.
On Wednesday, state Premier Chris Minns condemned the vandalism, characterizing the latest incident as a “deliberate attack designed to put fear into the hearts of the people that live in Sydney’s east.”
Minns also shared that he had a conversation with Amir Maimon, Israel’s ambassador to Australia, to assure him that the authorities are investigating the incidents, labeling them a “disgusting display of antisemitism” that has alarmed the “vast majority of people that live in New South Wales.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the anti-Israel vandalism in Woollahra, asserting that the country’s residents “want to live peacefully side by side” and “reject this abhorrent criminal behavior.”
“This is not a political act. This does not change anything that is occurring on the ground in the Middle East. This is an attack against their fellow Australians,” Albanese stated during an interview with ABC Radio National.
New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb announced that a “full police response is underway” and that an “extensive investigation” into the situation is in progress.
The Jewish community in Australia has reported a growing number of anti-Semitic attacks in recent years, particularly amid heightened tensions related to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza.
According to health authorities in the Palestinian enclave, over 44,000 people have been killed and more than 106,000 injured since the onset of Israel's assault against Hamas on October 7, 2023, which was triggered by a Hamas attack that resulted in over 1,200 Israeli fatalities and the kidnapping of several hundred individuals by Palestinian militants.
