The US Department of Justice has reportedly approved a taxpayer-funded “gender reassignment” surgery for an inmate who is charged with mailing explosives to the DOJ headquarters in Washington.

The inmate, initially unnamed in court documents, filed a lawsuit for a sex-change in December. On Monday, the Georgia Department of Corrections submitted a status report to the court indicating that the surgery will occur soon.

“The Gender Dysphoria Committee convened on November 1, 2024. The Committee has medically cleared Ms. [Jane] Doe for surgery and has informed the Georgia Department of Corrections that the recommended treatment plan for Ms. Doe is gender reassignment surgery,” the documents state, as reported by the conservative outlet Headline USA on Wednesday.

‘Jane Doe’ serves as a legal pseudonym for individuals wishing to remain anonymous.

Headline USA has identified the plaintiff as David Cassady, a 55-year-old serving a life sentence in a Georgia state prison since 1993 for multiple counts of “aggravated sodomy,” gang-related activities, and other offenses.

In April, the DOJ charged Cassady with creating two bombs and mailing them to a federal courthouse in Alaska and “a federal facility at 1400 New York Avenue NW in Washington, DC,” referring to the DOJ headquarters in the nation’s capital.

Cassady is alleged to have constructed the bombs between 2019 and 2020 while incarcerated at the now-closed Reidsville, Georgia prison, before being transferred to Phillips State Prison in Buford.

The federal indictment includes one count of making an unregistered destructive device, two counts of mailing a destructive device, and one count of attempted malicious use of an explosive. Cassady has pleaded not guilty.

Following the unsealing of the charges in April, Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported that one of the bombs was sent to the widow of a man whom Cassady sexually assaulted during his teenage years.

Though the federal trial was set for December 9, it has been postponed without a new date announced. According to Headline USA, while the DOJ refers to Cassady as a male in the bomb case, it is identifying him as a female in the amicus brief that supports his request for a sex-change operation funded by taxpayers.

Cassady's case appears to draw on precedent established by Peter “Donna” Langan, a neo-Nazi bank robber who last year became the first federal inmate to receive gender reassignment surgery at government expense.
