Voters across America are casting their ballots to decide between Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. National polls indicate that Harris and Trump are virtually tied, with similar trends observed in critical swing states, leading pollsters to anticipate a historically close contest.
By Monday morning, over 78 million Americans had participated in early voting, as reported by the Election Lab at the University of Florida. On the final day of campaigning, Harris and Trump concentrated their efforts in battleground states, presenting sharply contrasting visions for the nation's future.
Harris entered the race later than many candidates, clinching the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign in July due to a poor debate performance against Trump, during which he appeared disoriented and had difficulty articulating his thoughts.
Presidential elections in the U.S. are determined by the Electoral College system, allowing a candidate to win the presidency even without the popular vote. To secure victory, either Trump or Harris must obtain 270 out of the 538 electoral votes, with each state receiving a specific number of votes based on its representation in Congress.
