Right-wing US commentator Candace Owens, recognized for her contentious stances on race, gender, and social issues, has been denied entry into Australia for a proposed speaking tour. Reports indicate that authorities in the country cited her "capacity to incite discord."
Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke confirmed on Sunday that Owens’ visa application was rejected, asserting that “Australia’s national interest is best served when Candace Owens is somewhere else.”
Owens, who boasts 18 million followers on YouTube, drew backlash when she announced a five-city tour in Australia, primarily due to her history of provocative comments about Jewish, Muslim, and transgender communities, which many have deemed inflammatory and anti-Semitic.
“From downplaying the impact of the Holocaust with comments about [Nazi doctor Josef] Mengele through to claims that Muslims started slavery, Candace Owens has the capacity to incite discord in almost every direction,” Burke remarked in a statement.
In July, Owens expressed skepticism regarding well-documented medical experiments conducted on Jewish twins in concentration camps by the infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele during World War II, labeling the evidence “completely absurd” and “bizarre propaganda.”
Owens has faced accusations of anti-Semitism previously and was dismissed from the conservative news organization Daily Wire earlier this year for alleging that Israel was committing “genocide” in Gaza and stating that a “small ring” of “political Jews” in the U.S. “use the fact that they are Jewish to shield themselves from any criticism.”
Her comments ignited a public dispute with Daily Wire’s Jewish co-founder, Ben Shapiro, who denounced them as “disgraceful.”
In August, Jewish groups in Australia reportedly advocated for the cancellation of Owens' visa. The Anti-Defamation League, a U.S.-based group that campaigned for her visa revocation, claimed she has “come to espouse explicitly anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist and anti-Israel views.”
Additionally, LGBTQ+ advocacy organization Glaad has accused Owens of promoting anti-transgender sentiments, particularly after she asserted in 2020 that the movement for trans equality “is one of the most dangerous” and “evil” developments occurring.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the 35-year-old media figure sparked controversy by suggesting that the U.S. military should “invade Australia and free an oppressed people who are suffering under a totalitarian regime.”
