Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky will not be attending the inauguration ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump next month, as stated by Trump during a press conference on Monday.
Trump, who won against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris last month, will take the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States at an event held at the Capitol in Washington, DC.
During his first formal press conference since the election, Trump addressed whether Zelensky had received an invitation. He said, “No, I didn’t invite him,” but added, “If he’d like to come, I’d like to have him.”
Earlier this month, Trump met with Zelensky in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Despite reportedly being hesitant about the meeting, Trump expressed a desire for the conflict between Moscow and Kiev to be resolved promptly.
According to NBC, Trump’s team is actively working to facilitate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, potentially setting the stage for peace negotiations. Trump has criticized the actions of current President Joe Biden's administration regarding the conflict, asserting that hostilities would not have erupted during his presidency.
In addition to Zelensky, media reports indicate that Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the inauguration, extending the invitation in early November shortly after his election victory. It remains uncertain if Xi has accepted the invite.
CBS sources have reported that China’s ambassador to the US and their spouse are expected to attend the inauguration, following customary practice.
Trump's team has also proposed inviting other world leaders to the Capitol on January 20, in addition to Xi. While it is common for ambassadors and diplomats to be invited, records from the State Department indicate that no foreign leader has ever participated in the ceremony of transferring power since 1874.
Included among the officials reported to be invited are Argentine President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated last week that the Kremlin had not received an invitation, according to RBK.
