US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to bolster domestic security by constructing an ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense shield that will cover the entire nation. He made this declaration during his ‘Make America Great Again Victory Rally’ in Washington DC on Sunday, just before his inauguration as the 47th US president.
“I will direct our military to begin construction of the great Iron Dome Missile Defense Shield, which will all be made in the USA,” Trump stated to his audience, detailing his plans for the first 100 days of his presidency.
Throughout his election campaign, Trump consistently advocated for a domestically-produced ‘Iron Dome,’ which was included in the Republican Party’s commitments before the election and featured among Trump's “core promises.”
The original ‘Iron Dome’ was created by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, with assistance from the US. This system can intercept threats at a range of about 70km. For longer-range dangers, Israel employs additional systems such as David’s Sling and the Arrow 3. Trump has yet to clarify how he intends to modify the concept for implementation in the US.
Experts have raised concerns about the feasibility of replicating the Israeli-developed ‘Iron Dome,’ pointing out the significant differences in geographic contexts. The original system is designed to intercept short-range missiles, while the US primarily faces threats from intercontinental ballistic missiles.
“You can’t defend the entire United States. It’s unrealistic, unaffordable and unachievable,” General Glen VanHerck, the recently retired head of the US Northern Command, told ABC News. He remarked that the US military has not indicated a desire for a nationwide missile defense system, as such a project lacks strategic sense.
In addition to his ‘Iron Dome’ commitment, Trump also laid out several other initiatives for his administration's early days. These proposals included boosting artificial intelligence programs, creating a new Department of Government Efficiency, eliminating “wokeness” from the military, and making public the records related to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy.
“We’re going to give them the best first day, the biggest first week, and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history,” Trump asserted, noting that he also aims to repeal “every radical and foolish executive order of the Biden administration” within hours of taking office.
