Trump pledges to dispatch Americans to Mars
The new president has stated that planting the Stars and Stripes on Mars would fulfill the US's “destiny into the stars.”

In his inaugural address on Monday, US President Donald Trump pledged to send American astronauts to the Red Planet. He highlighted the significance of colonizing Mars by asserting that “ambition is the lifeblood of a great nation.”

Trump declared, “We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.” This announcement seemed to resonate with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who was spotted giving two thumbs up following Trump's Mars comment, which received applause from the audience. Musk has long been an advocate for Mars colonization and has promised to send humans there in the future.

During Trump's election campaign, Musk highlighted Mars colonization as a rationale for supporting the Republican candidate. He warned that “we will never reach Mars” if Joe Biden's vice president, Kamala Harris, were to win the election in November.

Last year, Musk shared his expectations for when SpaceX might reach the Red Planet, acknowledging that American astronauts might not arrive there during Trump's presidency. He mentioned in a series of posts on X, “Uncrewed Starships landing on Mars in 2 years, perhaps with crewed versions passing near Mars, and crewed Starships heading there in 4 years are all possible.”

Additionally, Musk voiced his thoughts on governance for those who colonize Mars, suggesting that colonists should select a different system than representative democracy. “The Martians will decide how they are ruled. I recommend direct, rather than representative, democracy,” Musk proposed.
