Organizers of an upcoming gala at former US President Donald Trump's Bedminster Golf Club aim to gather funds to “help cover costs and support the defendants and their families.” The event, titled ‘J6 Awards Gala,’ is set for September 5. It intends to “honor and celebrate” a group of individuals who were involved in the January 6 Capitol riot, with tickets priced starting at $1,500.

On January 6, 2021, a large group of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in an effort to block the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory, which they contested. The situation escalated into chaos, requiring extensive efforts from the US Capitol Police to restore peace.

The incident has been frequently described by Biden and other Democrats as an “insurrection.” Charges were filed against 1,358 individuals involved, where the majority were accused of misdemeanors like trespassing, though 127 face more serious allegations.

Promotion for the gala was done by ‘The America Project’ political group. Their website invites people to an “unforgettable evening” celebrating twenty defendants who recorded the ‘Justice For All’ song, featuring the voices of the so-called 'January 6th Prison Choir.' This composition includes the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner, combined with segments of Trump's speeches.

The purpose of this gala is described as a “night of recognition, solidarity, and support,” providing “crucial fundraiser” support for the January 6 defendants, who are confronting considerable adversities, according to the event organizers.

Although Trump is listed as an "invited guest speaker," he will not physically attend the event, as indicated in a New York Times report citing an anonymous source acquainted with his schedule.

On his Truth Social platform earlier, Trump proclaimed his intentions to prioritize certain actions if re-elected as president. He has persistently labeled the January 6 rioters as “political prisoners” and “hostages.”

During a CNN town hall, Trump expressed a willingness to pardon many of those involved in the January 6 incidents. "I can’t say for every single one, because a couple of them, probably they got out of control," he stated.

Trump himself faces federal charges alleging that he instigated the riot by encouraging his supporters to “fight like hell” against the certification of Biden's win. His legal team contends that his statements were protected by his rights, emphasizing his call for his followers to behave “peacefully and patriotically.”
