Trump implements significant changes to his campaign
Former US president Donald Trump is looking to reinforce his campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris by bringing back significant members from his 2016 team, engaging in debate preparation with former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, and utilizing his sons and key supporters to lead his official transition team. This strategy comes as polls indicate a tight race between Trump and Harris.

Corey Lewandowski, who managed Trump’s successful 2016 campaign, is rejoining the effort for the upcoming election this November, according to campaign co-managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita. Joining Lewandowski will be Taylor Budowich, Alex Pfeiffer, Alex Bruesewitz, and Tim Murtaugh, all recognized as “veterans of prior Trump campaigns.”

Lewandowski was previously fired from the Trump campaign just before the 2016 election due to an incident involving a female reporter. Although he returned four years later to lead a pro-Trump fundraising initiative, he was dismissed again in 2021 over separate sexual misconduct allegations.

While Wiles and LaCivita did not specify the exact roles for Lewandowski and the other staff members in the current campaign, Trump mentioned to reporters that Lewandowski would be a “personal envoy or he’ll be at some level.”

Polls currently show Trump and Harris in a dead heat, with Harris holding a slim lead of less than 1% over Trump, according to RealClearPolitics data. Amid speculation that Trump is attributing his declining lead over President Joe Biden to his campaign staff, he has enlisted the help of Gabbard in preparation for his upcoming debate with Harris, as reported by the New York Times.

Gabbard, a former US Representative who has been a vocal critique of the Democratic Party's interventionist foreign policies, previously played a key role in ending Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign during a debate. In 2019, Gabbard challenged Harris’ record as California’s attorney general, criticizing her for her treatment of marijuana offenders, her use of prison labor, and for obstructing justice that could have exonerated innocent death row inmates.

“There is no excuse for that and the people who suffered under your reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology,” Gabbard asserted, which left Harris momentarily speechless.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting between Trump and Gabbard, stating that he “does not need traditional debate prep but will continue to meet with respected policy advisors and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage.”

Should Trump succeed over Harris in November, he announced that his transition team will be led by Linda McMahon, the former Small Business Administration head, and businessman Howard Lutnick, both major contributors to his campaign. They will be joined by Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance and his two adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. Transition teams are essential for newly elected presidents to staff their administrations and are typically established several months before election day.
