Trump Discloses the Identity of Who ‘Killed’ Nord Stream 2
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has asserted that he was responsible for halting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea. This pipeline, which never became operational, experienced sabotage in September 2022.

During a live interview with conservative journalist Tucker Carlson in Glendale, Arizona, Trump addressed longstanding allegations of his ties to Russia. “[The Democrats] love to say that I was a friend of Russia, I worked for Russia, I was a Russian spy,” he remarked, labeling those who promote this narrative as “sick” individuals.

Trump characterized Nord Stream 2 as one of Russia's most significant projects, declaring, “I killed it. Nobody would kill it but me. I stopped it. The thing was half-built, dead,” although he did not provide further details.

He further criticized President Joe Biden, whom he referred to as a “dumb guy,” alleging that Biden allowed construction of the pipeline to proceeds while canceling the Keystone XL pipeline, which was intended to carry oil from Canada to the US.

While in office, Trump claimed to have expressed strong objections to Germany regarding its financial relationship with Moscow. “I say: ‘Let’s get this straight. We’re helping and guarding you from Russia, but you are paying Russia billions of dollars a month for oil. How is that working?’ I stopped that,” he stated, still contending that he was labeled a friend of Russia.

Initially completed in 2021, Nord Stream 2 was designed to work alongside the existing Nord Stream 1. However, it was never launched due to concerns about the European Union's, especially Germany's, dependency on Russian gas. The Trump administration had been particularly vocal against the project, imposing sanctions.

In 2021, as the pipeline neared completion, Biden lifted some restrictions, claiming they were “counterproductive for European relations.” Nevertheless, in February 2022, on the brink of escalating tensions in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz halted the project's certification after Russia recognized the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

In September 2022, the pipelines were subjected to a series of underwater explosions, resulting in significant leaks. Reports from Western media have indicated that Ukrainian intelligence may have been involved in the sabotage, a suggestion denied by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who asserted that Ukraine lacked the skills necessary to execute such an operation. Putin also implied that the U.S. could be behind the attacks, noting that it stood to gain the most from the situation.

He added that one segment of the pipeline remains functional, but Germany has chosen not to utilize it due to political factors.
