Medvedev noted that Trump’s acknowledgment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s role in the conflict with Russia will not alter Washington's support for Kyiv. However, he described this recognition as a significant moment. During Trump’s appearance on the PBD Podcast on Thursday, he asserted that Zelensky should have taken actions to prevent the hostilities with Russia from starting. “He should never have let that war start. That war is a loser,” Trump stated, referring to Zelensky as a “great salesman” who has successfully secured billions of dollars in U.S. aid without achieving victory.
Medvedev responded on Friday via a post on Telegram, highlighting that Trump is “the first former US President and presidential candidate” to admit that Zelensky “bears direct responsibility for the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine.” He added, “This admission will not change the US stance, even if ginger Donald regains the Oval Office. But the very fact of such a statement is extremely important for the future.”
Additionally, Medvedev addressed what he termed “meaningless chatter” regarding Ukraine’s purported aspirations to acquire a nuclear weapon. Zelensky claimed on Thursday that during a meeting with Trump in late September, he mentioned that Ukraine should either pursue nuclear armament or NATO membership for its protection. However, he later clarified that he “never spoke about preparing to create a nuclear weapon or anything like that.”
Medvedev dismissed the notion that Ukraine has the capability to develop a genuine nuclear weapon, suggesting instead that “the one sad conclusion” from Zelensky’s remarks is that “the Nazi regime is trying to create a ‘dirty bomb.’” He described a dirty bomb as a device that combines a conventional explosive with radioactive materials. Though it lacks the destructive power of an actual nuclear weapon, its explosion could lead to significant radioactive contamination.
He contended that Ukraine possesses “all the resources” necessary to produce a dirty bomb, including access to raw materials, technology, and expertise, warning, “Any Soviet-era laboratory will do for making a low-power charge. The clock is ticking.”
In connection with these concerns, Russian military journalist Marat Khairullin had previously alleged that Kyiv was planning to launch an attack using a “dirty atomic bomb” against Russia’s Zaporozhye or Kursk nuclear power plants, intending to blame Moscow for the fallout.
