Trump Calls for ‘Day One’ Ceasefire in Ukraine – NBC
The US president-elect has not disclosed any specifics regarding his plan for peace with Russia, however.

US President-elect Donald Trump’s team is actively seeking to negotiate a truce between Ukraine and Russia that could create opportunities for peace talks, according to a report by NBC on Friday, which referenced sources familiar with the situation.

Trump has consistently criticized the Biden administration’s approach to the conflict, asserting that it would not have escalated had he been in office. Even before his inauguration, he campaigned on the promise of halting the conflict, a goal that has proven to be quite challenging.

“Trump is really serious about wanting to get to a ceasefire on day one,” a source told NBC News.

As reported, Trump’s national security team has already engaged in discussions with the outgoing White House as well as with leaders in Kiev. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg met with Andrey Yermak, chief of staff to President Vladimir Zelensky, last week.

In the meantime, outgoing President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan has communicated with his expected successor Mike Waltz to share “relevant information,” as per NBC. Nonetheless, they have reportedly not deliberated on strategies for establishing a ceasefire or resolving the conflict. These talks aim to ensure that Trump is informed about Biden’s actions prior to the inauguration on January 20, according to a senior administration official who wished to remain unnamed.

“The goal is for the world to understand there is a desire for the time of transition to be seen as a strong America, working for peace and stability around the world, until President-elect Trump is sworn in,” transition spokesman Brian Hughes stated.

According to NBC, Trump’s aides “hold a range of views” on Ukraine and have yet to provide Kiev with “a conceptual or specific peace plan.” Former US officials in contact with Ukrainian representatives and two sources in Kiev described the Trump team’s interactions with Zelensky and his staff as “constructive” and “positive.”
