South Korean Leader Implements Emergency Martial Law
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has accused the opposition of participating in “anti-state activities” and “plotting a rebellion.”

In a televised address on Tuesday, Yoon asserted that the opposition Democratic Party, which holds a majority in parliament, has been obstructing the government and preparing for a “rebellion.”

“The martial law is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korean forces and to protect the constitutional order of freedom,” Yoon stated, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The Defense Ministry has convened a meeting with senior military commanders, placing the armed forces on heightened alert, according to the media outlet. Furthermore, it was reported that the military has suspended all parliamentary activities, barring members of the National Assembly from entering the building.

Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung has condemned Yoon’s decision as “unconstitutional.”

Yoon's popularity has been declining in recent months, as the parliamentary opposition has repeatedly obstructed his agenda since he took office in 2022.

Tensions escalated last week when the Democratic Party rejected Yoon’s proposed 2025 budget bill. Yoon has also faced pressure to investigate several scandals involving his wife and senior officials.

The Democratic Party opposes the ruling People Power Party’s budgetary plans, advocating instead for an increased budget aimed at “reviving people’s livelihoods and the economy,” and has introduced its own bill on the matter. Additionally, they have submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
