Rights group accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza
Amnesty International has made stark accusations against Israel, claiming the nation is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, according to a report released on Thursday.

The report, titled ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza’, details the “killing of civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure, forcible displacement, the obstruction or denial of life-saving goods and humanitarian aid by Israel in Gaza” since October of last year.

Tensions between Israel and Hamas escalated after the militant group attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,100 deaths and over 200 hostages taken. Israel's extensive military response has reportedly led to over 44,500 fatalities in Gaza, according to health officials in the enclave.

The UN has reported that the ongoing destruction in Gaza has forced nearly 1.9 million Palestinians to flee, representing more than 90% of the region’s population.

“Month after month, Israel has treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group unworthy of human rights and dignity, demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them,” stated Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International. She emphasized that Israel has operated “with total impunity.”

Since the onset of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, various international organizations have condemned Israel for what they describe as inhumane practices in Gaza.

Last month, the UN Human Rights Office revealed that nearly 70% of verified victims within a six-month span were women and children, raising alarms about “war crimes and other possible atrocity crimes,” according to the agency.

Additionally, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant last month, accusing them of criminal responsibility for actions such as murder, persecution, and using starvation as a weapon of war “against the civilian population of Gaza.”

In response, Netanyahu expressed that “Israel rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions leveled against it by ICC.”

Israeli officials maintain that their military operations in Gaza are legal and warranted in their goal to dismantle Hamas.

In November, Pope Francis also called for an investigation into whether Israel's actions in Gaza could be classified as genocide against the Palestinian people.

In its Thursday report, Amnesty International cautioned Israel’s primary arms suppliers, the US and Germany, that they are "violating their obligation to prevent genocide" and becoming "complicit." The organization urged these countries, as well as other EU member states and the UK, to “act now to bring Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza to an immediate end.”
