Putin Remarks on Hunter Biden's Pardon
Vladimir Putin stated that the decision by outgoing US President Joe Biden to pardon his son reflects a more human side of him rather than a political one. Read Full Article at RT.com
Putin shared his thoughts on the matter during his annual end-of-year press conference in Moscow, which featured a ‘Direct Line’ question-and-answer session. When asked about Biden granting a pardon to his son, he referred to the issue as “such a subtle issue.”
“He is a politician. And it is always important what is more in you - a politician or a human being. It turned out that Biden is more of a human being, I would not condemn him for this,” he said.
He also drew parallels to Russian history, citing the case of Yakov, the eldest son of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, who died in 1943 in a German concentration camp after Stalin declined to exchange him for German Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus.
Allegedly, Stalin stated, “I will not exchange a field marshal for a soldier.” Putin highlighted that circumstances were different during that period, emphasizing that surrender was viewed as treason when the country was "on the brink of total destruction." He noted that the measures taken for victory were “tough, if not brutal.”
Hunter Biden was convicted in June for lying about his long-standing drug addiction while purchasing a handgun. In a separate case, he pleaded guilty in September to three felonies and six misdemeanor tax offenses, with sentencing scheduled for this month.
Biden granted his son a pardon on December 1, despite previously stating he would not do so. He argued that Hunter was prosecuted “selectively and unfairly” due to their familial relationship. The pardon covers all offenses committed or potentially committed between January 1, 2014, when Hunter Biden began working for a Ukrainian gas company, and December 1, 2024.
US Republicans have accused Biden’s son of acting as a “bagman” in allegedly corrupt dealings with countries like Ukraine and China. Both Biden and Hunter have denied these allegations, with the President publicly supporting his son and calling him “the smartest guy I know.”
