The acclaimed singer addressed a crowd in Detroit on Saturday, proudly stating her connection to the city.
“If Kamala Harris wins next month’s US election,” Lizzo declared, “the whole country will be like Detroit.” This assertion echoes a similar remark previously made by former President Donald Trump, who made it in a derogatory manner.
At the rally, Lizzo highlighted Detroit's achievements and resilience. "You know, they say if Kamala Harris wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit, okay? Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit," she exclaimed. "We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry, so put some respect on Detroit’s name, okay!”
Once the heart of the American automobile industry and considered the wealthiest city globally in the 1950s, Detroit faced severe challenges starting with the 1973 Oil Crisis. The rise of imported vehicles further devastated its car manufacturing sector, and the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement exacerbated the exodus of jobs from the region, leading to a reputation for decline and urban decay.
Currently, about one-third of Detroit’s population of 640,000 lives below the poverty line, and the city holds the second-highest crime rate in the United States, based on FBI statistics from 2019.
In a recent address at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump drew a stark comparison, likening Detroit to a "developing nation." He warned, "Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands," referring to Harris.
As the election approaches, Trump and Harris find themselves in a tight race in Michigan, where recent polling averages from RealClearPolitics show Trump leading Harris by 1.2 points. Detroit, the most populous city in the state, has historically leaned Democratic, a trend that was evident when President Joe Biden won Michigan by just over 150,000 votes in 2020.
