The highly decorated U.S. Army Green Beret suspected of orchestrating an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day reportedly utilized generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, to aid in planning the attack, according to Las Vegas police.
During a news conference on Tuesday, law enforcement officials provided new details about the explosion. They revealed that 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger had made queries on ChatGPT concerning potential targets, the velocity of specific ammunition, and the legality of fireworks.
On January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck loaded with fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel detonated outside the Trump International Hotel. Livelsberger, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside. The explosion resulted in minor injuries to seven nearby individuals and caused minimal damage to the hotel.
During the same press conference, Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, stated, “This is the first incident that I’m aware of on US soil where ChatGPT is utilized to help an individual build a particular device.” He called the use of generative AI a “game-changer” and referred to it as “a concerning moment.”
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, expressed its commitment to ensuring that its tools are used “responsibly” and noted that they are designed to refuse harmful instructions, according to a statement emailed to the Associated Press.
Launched in 2022, ChatGPT is one of several technologies developed by OpenAI. Unlike previous large language models, this virtual assistant is freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection and aims to be more user-friendly and intuitive.
Reports indicate that Livelsberger took his own life with a gunshot before the explosion was triggered, but investigators remain unclear about what precisely caused the blast. They suggested that the flash from the firearm he used to fatally shoot himself inside the truck could have initiated the explosion.
Furthermore, Las Vegas police released Livelsberger’s letters on Friday, which highlighted the army veteran’s profound frustration with societal issues and his ongoing internal struggles. Officials noted that he had been facing post-traumatic stress disorder and personal turmoil, including a recent separation from his wife.
