Elon Musk, appointed head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, is tasked with revising federal spending, focusing on the Pentagon and the Department of Education. This move aligns with a broader initiative to reduce public expenses.
Musk, known as the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and the owner of X, has been designated as a “special government employee” under Trump’s administration to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. This temporary body aims to cut up to $2 trillion in federal expenditures by July 2026.
During a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump stated that Musk will review “just about everything” while assessing the budgets of both departments.
“I’ve instructed him to go check out education to check out the Pentagon, which is the military, and sadly you’ll find some things that are pretty bad, but I don’t think proportionately, you’re going to see anything like we just saw,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that the Department of Government Efficiency would uncover “a lot,” particularly considering how “bad” things were during the previous review.
Earlier in the week, Trump mentioned that billions of dollars had been misappropriated by the US Agency for International Development, asserting that most of the funds had been used for favorable media coverage of Democrats.
The current focus of Trump’s administration is to shut down the agency, which serves as the primary means for funding political initiatives abroad. On the first day of his presidency, Trump instituted a 90-day freeze on nearly all foreign aid.
Since assuming office on January 20, Trump has also opposed diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government. Upon taking the oath, he signed a series of orders that rolled back protections for transgender individuals and dismantled DEI initiatives.
Last week, the Department of Government Efficiency reported that it had salvaged over $1 billion by cutting contracts related to DEI. Prior to this, the agency announced it had reduced federal spending by approximately $1 billion per day as of January 29, implementing a halt to the hiring for unnecessary positions, eliminating DEI, and stopping improper payments to foreign organizations.
