Muslim lawmaker says sorry for firing at Jesus depiction
A councilwoman from Zurich has come under fire after posting a photo of herself using a Christian image for target practice.

Sanija Ameti, a Muslim member of the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland, faced significant backlash over the weekend when she shared images on Instagram in which she held a sport pistol alongside another photo depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, which had been shot at and had pellet holes visible on their faces.

Reports indicate that the image she used was a reproduction of a painting by medieval Italian artist Tommaso del Mazza, sourced from an illustrated catalogue.

Following the criticism, Ameti removed the post and expressed her apologies. She explained that her choice to use that specific page from the catalogue was based solely on its size and visibility, not the content. “I didn’t pay attention to the content of the images,” she stated. “That wasn’t right. I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart if I offended anyone.”

In an interview with the newspaper Blick, Ameti characterized her actions as “absolutely stupid,” acknowledging that she “didn’t think anything of it” at the time.

Numerous conservative politicians have condemned her behavior and called for her resignation from her official positions. Nicolas Rimoldi, founder of the Mass-Voll party, accused her of “inciting hatred” against Christians and threatened to pursue legal action against her.

Ameti's family fled to Switzerland from war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s. A trained lawyer, she serves as a councilwoman in the canton of Zurich and co-presides over Operation Libero, an organization committed to combating populism and promoting an “open and progressive” society, as stated in its mission.
