Musk's X Halts Journalist Over Release of 'Hacked' J.D. Vance Documents
Independent US journalist Ken Klippenstein has faced suspension from X following his publication of a dossier compiled by former President Donald Trump’s campaign during its vetting process for running mate J.D. Vance.

Klippenstein, who recently left The Intercept to focus on self-publishing via Substack, shared the 271-page document with his followers on X on Thursday, emphasizing its relevance to the upcoming election season.

The dossier, created in February, contains a section outlining "potential vulnerabilities," including Vance's previous criticisms of Trump. Other media outlets opted not to publish the document, raising concerns regarding its origins and overall newsworthiness.

“Ken Klippenstein was temporarily suspended for violating our rules on posting unredacted private personal information, specifically Sen. Vance’s physical addresses and the majority of his Social Security number,” an X spokesperson stated.

Elon Musk described the publication as “one of the most egregious, evil doxxing actions we’ve ever seen,” adding that “Presidential candidates are not speculatively in danger – there have already been two attempts on [Donald Trump’s] life,” and noting that “the doxxing included detailed information on the addresses of their children.”

Klippenstein responded to his suspension by defending his actions, asserting that he provided a link to a document containing information that was already publicly accessible. “This chilling effect on speech is exactly why we published the Vance Dossier in its entirety,” he remarked in a message directed at “self-styled free speech warrior Elon Musk.” He contended that traditional news outlets have been overly cautious in handling sensitive material, fearing backlash or accusations of disseminating “foreign malign influence.”

In August, Trump’s campaign team alleged that their internal emails and documents had been illegally obtained by “foreign sources,” which they claimed aimed to “sow chaos” and interfere with the upcoming presidential election.

At that time, PMG reported receiving communications from an anonymous individual known as ‘Robert,’ who offered documents from the Trump campaign, including dossiers on both Vance and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, another contender for the vice-presidential nomination. This individual reportedly reached out to several media organizations, claiming to possess a “variety” of Trump’s “legal and court documents” alongside “internal campaign discussions.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung asserted that these documents were “obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States” and suggested that these sources were attempting to “interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our democratic process.”
