Musk Threatens Legal Action Against Media Reports on Tesla Cybertruck Explosion
The Tesla CEO has been addressing safety concerns regarding the Cybertruck on X following the explosion that occurred on New Year’s Day.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck suggested on X that Musk "should consider suing outlets who framed the story like this," sharing a screenshot of a Business Insider article regarding the event. The article's headline described the incident as a “Cybertruck explosion,” a characterization echoed by numerous reports. Starbuck continued, stating, “These headlines are sabotaging @Tesla’s brand by making people think it caught on fire. There’s about 1 Tesla fire for every 130 million miles traveled. Other cars have 1 every 18 million miles.”
In response to the suggestion of pursuing legal action, Musk noted, “Maybe it is time to do so.”
A spokesperson for Business Insider opted not to comment on the situation.
The explosion on Wednesday morning resulted in the death of a suspect inside the Cybertruck, identified as an Army special operations soldier, and injured seven bystanders. Authorities discovered a stash of fireworks, mortars, and gas canisters in the vehicle's trunk.
Musk, who has close ties to President-elect Donald Trump, has criticized the media coverage on X, defending the safety of the Cybertruck.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated during a news conference, "The fact that this was a Cybertruck really limited the damage that occurred inside the valet because it had most of the blast go up through the truck and out.”
Musk shared a video of the conference, adding: “The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken.”
