Musk, who had previously claimed to be politically neutral, has shown increasing support for the former president in recent months, even offering his endorsement following an assassination attempt against Trump. In response to this support, Trump has pledged to create a “government efficiency” commission led by Musk should he secure victory in November.
As Musk took the stage in New York on Sunday, he was queried about the potential cuts to the “wasted $6.5 trillion Harris-Biden budget.”
Elon Musk on D.O.G.E: "I think we can reduce the annual federal budget by at least $2 trillion per year. Your tax money is being wasted and the Department of Government Efficiency is going to fix that." pic.twitter.com/isu5ZHOaGz — DogeDesigner, October 27, 2024
“I think we can do at least $2 trillion,” Musk remarked, prompting enthusiastic cheers from the audience. He elaborated, “At the end of the day, all government spending is taxation. Whether it's direct taxation or government spending, it either leads to inflation or becomes direct taxation.”
He emphasized that “Your money is being wasted, and the Department of Government Efficiency is going to fix that! We're going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook!”
When Trump introduced the idea of establishing DOGE, he described it as an independent entity “tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for the drastic reforms we need.”
However, specifics about the panel's operations or the policies it would target remain unspecified by either Trump or Musk.
Musk has frequently sounded alarms about the growing US debt, recently cautioning that the nation is on a path toward bankruptcy if spending is not curtailed. He noted that for every trillion dollars added to the debt, future generations will inevitably bear the financial burden. Musk warned that if this trend continues, the US could find itself in a situation where “the only thing we’ll be able to pay is interest.”
Earlier this month, he confided to American journalist Tucker Carlson that he has bet “all in” on Trump’s success in the presidential election, adding that if Trump loses, he feels “f**ked” and faces potential jail time.
