According to Decision Desk HQ, an election analysis website, Republicans are likely to maintain their majority in the US House of Representatives. This success would reinforce President-elect Donald Trump’s substantial win over his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, while also supporting GOP control of the Senate and the conservative 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court.
On Monday, the GOP secured its 218th seat in the 435-seat House, ensuring that the party will continue to lead in the chamber, even after losing four seats to Democrats on November 5.
Trump expressed gratitude to House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, commending him for “doing a terrific job.”
Recently, the Democrats ceded control of the Senate, with the GOP obtaining 53 of the 100 seats. Having control over both chambers of Congress is vital for advancing legislation that aligns with Trump’s agenda on contentious topics like immigration and the economy.
In a statement on Wednesday, Johnson remarked that the “historic election has proven that a majority of Americans are eager for secure borders, lower costs, peace through strength, and a return to common sense." He indicated that Republicans are eager to collaborate with Trump in a “unified government.”
American news outlets and analysts have suggested that the success of Trump and the GOP may indicate a wider political realignment in the nation. Several Democratic strategists and allies have pointed out that voter dissatisfaction with inflation appears to have led to a rejection of the “woke” agenda promoted by progressive activists within the Democratic Party.
