Moscow: US to Allow Zelensky 'Free Hand' for Deep Strikes Inside Russia
Washington has effectively become a party to the Ukraine conflict, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Zakharova stated that Washington is willing to lift its ban on Ukrainian strikes deep within Russian territory using US-supplied weapons. This follows comments from Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, who indicated that US policy permits Ukraine to conduct counterattacks to defend itself from Russian assaults, particularly in the Kursk Region, where Ukrainian forces have been active since early August.

On Monday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby informed reporters that the US is aware of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s "desire" to use American weapons like ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 300 km (186 miles), against targets deep inside Russia. Kirby added, “We will keep the conversations with the Ukrainians going [on the issue], but we are going to keep them private.”

Zakharova remarked on Friday that "extremely serious conclusions" could be drawn from Washington’s recent statements, asserting that "Ukraine has been given a carte blanche for operations in Russian regions." She emphasized that the Biden administration appears poised to make further concessions to Zelensky, allowing him to use virtually any type of American weaponry, including for strikes deep into Russian territory.

According to Zakharova, through its ongoing support for Kiev, "Washington has effectively become a party to the armed conflict over Ukraine." She criticized the US for its escalatory stance, stating, "The US course towards escalation is becoming increasingly outrageous. It seems that the American elites have cast aside the last vestiges of common sense and believe that anything is allowed to them."

Earlier this week, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov likened the actions of the US and its allies to "children playing with matches," expressing concern over the implications of allowing Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory. He warned that it is dangerous for those "entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country."

Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned that Moscow may consider an asymmetrical response to the supply of long-range systems to Ukraine by arming adversaries of Washington, such as North Korea, with advanced weaponry.
