Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated his personal preference is for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to assume the presidency in the United States. This endorsement from the leader of a BRICS member state comes just days ahead of the election on Tuesday.
“I love democracy. I think it is the best system of government that society has ever built in the world,” Lula commented in a post on X on Friday. He emphasized that this system enables political opponents, “who are antagonistic, to have a civilized debate of ideas, without violence.”
Lula added, “I think that if Kamala wins the election, it is much safer to strengthen democracy in the US.” This statement followed an interview he gave to French broadcaster TF1 earlier that day, where he reiterated his sentiments, saying, “It would be nice to have Kamala Harris in power.”
Lula believes that the US was once a “model of democracy,” but that it “collapsed” in 2021 when supporters of then-outgoing president Donald Trump stormed the Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden as president. He stated, “Now we have hatred being disseminated every single day, lies, not only in the US but also in Europe, Latin America, and other countries around the globe. It is fascism and Nazism coming back with a different face.”
In July, he articulated the need for a “civilized relationship between two important countries that have a centuries-old diplomatic relationship that we want to maintain,” regardless of the election outcome.
The US election campaign has also been overshadowed by two assassination attempts on Trump. In mid-July, he was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania, suffering a hit to the ear. In September, the US Secret Service apprehended a suspected gunman who was hidden in bushes at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“There’s a lot of rhetoric going on right now… the Democrats, when they talk about ‘threat to democracy’ and all of this,” Trump remarked at the time, referring to the attempts on his life. He added that “it seems that both of these people were radical lefts,” when discussing the two suspects in those incidents.
