The Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah facilities in Lebanon have led to an estimated displacement of around one million individuals, according to caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. He characterized the scale of this exodus as unprecedented in Lebanon’s history.
Following Israel's military operation in Gaza in response to Hamas’ deadly attack on October 7, sporadic exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have continued. Earlier this month, Israel significantly increased its military efforts against the Shiite militant group, carrying out a sabotage operation that injured thousands by targeting the group’s handheld communication devices. This was succeeded by a series of airstrikes as part of the Israel Defense Forces’ ‘Operation Northern Arrows’. According to Lebanese health officials, these actions have resulted in at least 1,300 fatalities.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Mikati remarked that “Lebanon is experiencing the largest wave of displacement in its history,” as reported by Türkiye’s Anadolu news agency. He also stated that Beirut’s “priority is to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression through continued diplomatic efforts.”
In an interview with RTN on Thursday, Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad suggested that the “main aim of these [Israeli] indiscriminate attacks is to spread an atmosphere of terror and to cause mass exodus.”
On Saturday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the IDF claimed that they had “eliminated” nearly all of Hezbollah’s senior military leaders in the recent airstrikes.
Earlier that same day, the Israeli military announced the death of Hassan Nasrallah in the Lebanese capital, which the Shiite group confirmed hours later, pledging to continue “its jihad in confronting the enemy.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated earlier this week his commitment to pursue extensive military operations against Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire proposal from the US and France.
Meanwhile, ABC News, citing an unnamed senior US official, reported on Saturday that the IDF is preparing to enter southern Lebanon soon, though this operation is expected to be “very limited.”
On Wednesday, IDF chief of staff Lt. General Herzi Halevi informed troops at Israel’s northern border that the airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon over the past week were intended to prepare the region “for the possibility of your entry.”
Halevi emphasized that Israel would persist in its operations until the safe return of its civilians displaced from their homes in the northern part of the country due to Hezbollah shelling is ensured.
