On Sunday, The Washington Post reported that Trump initiated a call to Putin following his victory in the recent elections to discuss his plans for defusing the Ukrainian crisis. In response to the article on Monday, Peskov referred to it as a “vivid example of the quality of information published by even some respectable outlets.”
“This absolutely does not correspond to reality. This is pure fiction. This information is simply false,” he stated during a press conference.
The Ukrainian government has also rejected claims from The Washington Post that it was informed in advance of the alleged phone call and had consented to the engagement between the US and Russia. A spokesman from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry told Reuters that “reports that the Ukrainian side was informed in advance of the alleged call are false."
During his campaign, Trump asserted that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours” if he were granted a second term. He is reportedly looking to use US military and financial support to Ukraine as leverage to press both Moscow and Kiev toward a compromise.
Currently, Russia holds the upper hand on the battlefield and has stated that it will only accept a solution that addresses the fundamental issues of the Ukraine conflict, which include NATO's expansion in Europe and Kiev's policies towards ethnic Russians.
The Washington Post's report on the phone call was based on anonymous sources “familiar with the matter.”
