Japanese car exports to Russia surge, according to data
The increase follows a general rise in trade and tourism between Japan and Russia.

In September 2024, Japan's exports of passenger cars to Russia soared by 132.2% compared to the same month the previous year, despite Tokyo's commitment to limit automotive sales to the sanctions-affected nation, according to data released by the Finance Ministry on Thursday.

Additionally, Japan's exports of spare vehicle parts and components to Russia increased by 21.3% year-on-year in September, as indicated by the latest statistics.

This spike follows a period from April to September 2024 during which Japan had decreased passenger car shipments to Russia by 11.3% compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.

Overall trade between Russia and Japan has seen an increase over the last two months, marking the first such growth since 2022.

In August, bilateral trade surged by 23.8%, reaching 105.59 billion yen, while mutual trade in September grew by 22.7% to 98.6 billion yen, as reported by the ministry.

Trade turnover in September was significantly supported by Japan's car exports, which constituted 65% of all goods sold, alongside Russia's energy exports to Japan, which comprised 70%.

Last month, Tokyo increased its imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 11.7% compared to the same time in 2023. However, Japan's LNG imports had declined by 7.1% in the first half of the year, according to data.

Despite Japan's enforcement of "tough sanctions" against Russia, as noted by officials, Tokyo remains involved in energy projects on Sakhalin Island due to their crucial role in the country’s energy security.

Moreover, Japan's imports of grain from Russia surged by 997.9%, along with a 100% increase in vegetable imports and a 21.6% rise in seafood imports in September compared to the same month the previous year.

Tourism has also seen a boost, with Russian visitor traffic to Japan more than doubling over the past year. During the first nine months of 2024, 63,900 Russian tourists traveled to Japan, an increase of 136.1% from the same period last year, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
