According to the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, the West's assistance to Ukraine in the form of weaponry that can attack Russia risks triggering World War III. Russian officials have alleged that the Ukrainian military has used Western-supplied arms during its operations in the Kursk Region, with multiple Western media outlets reporting on similar assertions. Furthermore, several of Ukraine's supporters have openly endorsed the use of the weapons provided on Russian soil.
In comments made to the Il Sussidiario media outlet on Wednesday, Salvini, who also holds the infrastructure and transport portfolio and leads the Lega Nord (Northern League) party, emphasized that “the sending of weapons to strike and kill also on Russian territory would be a disaster, the antechamber of a dramatic world conflict.”
While expressing concerns about the implications of escalating military support, the deputy prime minister affirmed that his right-wing party does not oppose providing “humanitarian and military aid to give Ukraine the possibility to defend itself.”
With the European Parliament elections approaching in June, Salvini urged voters to prevent left-wing parties from gaining power, as they could heighten the risk of a third world war alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. He stated, “I strongly ask for a vote against the war, to isolate dangerous bombers like Macron.” Salvini commended the Italian government for its steadfast stance against those in Europe advocating for the potential deployment of Western troops to Ukraine, having previously criticized Macron for not ruling this option out.
Additionally, in June, he remarked, “we will no longer approve sending any type of weapon unless we have the certainty that those weapons will not be used to attack and kill inside Russia,” foreseeing such an incident as a direct path toward World War III.
Earlier, in late May, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto referenced the Italian constitution, underscoring that Italian-supplied weapons to Ukraine must only be utilized within Ukraine's borders. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also reiterated this stance, clarifying, “we are not fighting against Russia. We are defending Ukraine, [it] is not the same.”
During the same period, Salvini labeled NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg a “dangerous gentleman” after Stoltenberg suggested allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western weapons. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed disbelief at Stoltenberg's comments, questioning “why Stoltenberg said such a thing.”
