The al-Falah school, located in Gaza City's Zeitoun neighborhood, was targeted early Saturday morning. This establishment was one of many schools and public buildings repurposed as shelters for displaced residents, managed primarily by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees following tensions that escalated last October with Israel's declaration of war on Hamas.
In response to these allegations, the IDF asserted that the location was being used by Hamas as a cover for a command center. In a public statement, the IDF justified the strike by noting, “Before the attack, many steps were taken to reduce the chance of harming civilians, including the use of precision weaponry” and added that it leveraged aerial surveillance to minimize casualties. The IDF emphasized its commitment to “continuing to act with strength and determination against terrorist organizations that exploit schools and other civilian facilities for military purposes.”
The incident at al-Falah school followed a similar episode where the al-Jaouni school in central Gaza was hit, resulting in significant casualties including UN personnel. The IDF maintained that this school was concealing a Hamas command center as well.
Footage captured by Palestinian journalist Islam Bader illustrates the severe structural damage inflicted on the al-Falah school, with emergency responders seen navigating through the debris.
This tragic event comes amid prolonged hostilities in the region, which were intensified by a surprise attack by Hamas last October. Israel’s subsequent military response and strict blockade have led to substantial loss of life and displacement, severely affecting the region's infrastructure and living conditions, as reported by international humanitarian bodies.
