Israel Strikes Near Beirut Airport While Passenger Plane Is on the Tarmac
Footage captured by a Sputnik Arabic reporter reveals an Israeli bomb demolishing a building perilously close to the runway at Beirut’s airport.

On Thursday, Sputnik Arabic released a video showing the Israeli military targeting a site alarmingly near Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport, coinciding with a large passenger jet taxiing in the vicinity. The video depicts a significant explosion that destroyed a low-rise building situated mere dozens of meters from the tarmac.

The clip begins with an airliner making its way along the airport’s tarmac. Suddenly, a powerful blast resonates, collapsing a nearby structure. The explosion sends thick plumes of gray smoke and dust soaring into the sky.

The aircraft appears to remain undamaged and continues its taxiing after the explosion. It is not clear whether it was preparing for takeoff or was maneuvering following a landing. Reports indicate that Middle East Airlines is currently the only commercial airline operating in and out of Beirut, maintaining numerous flights despite the frequent Israeli shelling that sometimes targets areas close to the airport.

In September, Israel initiated a significant offensive in Lebanon, launching extensive airstrikes on Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have also commenced a ground incursion as tensions escalated between West Jerusalem and Hezbollah, the militant group based in Lebanon.

Over the past year, the two sides have engaged in sporadic exchanges of fire, with Hezbollah aiming to retaliate against Israel for its actions against Hamas in Gaza. The IDF's invasion of Lebanon followed a sabotage operation that targeted Hezbollah’s handheld communication devices, resulting in numerous injuries.

The Israeli military claimed to have killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during one of its airstrikes. By late September, Israel announced that nearly all of the group’s military leaders had been eliminated, but operations have continued.

Concerns over IDF actions in Lebanon have risen internationally, especially following attacks that impacted UN peacekeepers located in the southern part of the country. Last month, the US expressed its "deep concern" regarding reports of such incidents. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell characterized one of these attacks as an “inadmissible act, for which there is no justification.”
