Argentine President Javier Milei is set to announce a new agreement with the US during his visit with President-elect Donald Trump at his Florida residence, according to reports from Buenos Aires.
Since taking office, the Libertarian politician has implemented significant cuts to Argentina’s government structure within a year. He arrived at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday for an investor event that is scheduled to last until Saturday.
During his address at the Conservative Political Action Conference investor summit, Milei is anticipated to advocate for the establishment of a “league of conservative nations,” as per Argentine media. It has been reported that he seeks a pact with the US centered on “freedom of trade and military cooperation.”
Milei is optimistic that Trump’s recent victory in the US presidential election will facilitate Argentina's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund regarding $44 billion in debt. Economy Minister Luis Caputo has expressed a desire for a $10 million disbursement to bolster Central Bank reserves and eliminate capital controls.
Argentina is keen on developing closer connections between the US Central Intelligence Agency and its State Intelligence Secretariat.
Earlier this week, Milei commended Trump for “copying our model” in his efforts to reduce government bureaucracy. He disclosed that his Deregulation and State Transformation Minister Federico Sturzenegger has been in contact with tech billionaire Elon Musk “to see how to deregulate the US economy.”
Trump has recently appointed Musk to the Department of Government Efficiency, an extra-governmental agency focused on streamlining and reforms in Washington, with a mandate extending to July 4, 2026. Reports suggest that Milei and Musk are scheduled to meet in Florida.
The proposed trade agreement with the US would significantly undermine Mercosur, the Southern Common Market comprising Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The bloc is currently engaged in negotiations for a trade deal with the EU.
Following his Mar-a-Lago visit, Milei is expected to host French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday in Buenos Aires, participate in the G20 Leaders Summit in Brazil on Monday, and then return to Argentina to welcome Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni next Wednesday.
On Thursday, after his discussion with Trump, Milei recalled his delegation from the UN climate conference in Azerbaijan.
