Israel Preparing for New Gaza Invasion, According to WSJ
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s team is reportedly focused on defeating Hamas by seizing control over significant areas of the Palestinian enclave.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Netanyahu and his national-security advisers are allegedly planning a substantial ground offensive aimed at capturing extensive territories in Gaza. This initiative follows a recent resurgence of Israeli airstrikes in the region after a temporary truce between Hamas and Israel lapsed on March 1. The ceasefire, which was mediated by the US, Qatar, and Egypt, resulted in a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces and some limited releases of hostages. However, since its collapse, both sides have exchanged blame for the failure to renew the agreement.

As reported by the WSJ on Sunday, Israeli forces have already advanced into northern Gaza, as well as areas near Rafah and the central Netzarim corridor, initiating a campaign to reclaim and hold territory that was previously abandoned under the ceasefire terms.

Netanyahu's new advisers are said to be advocating for a military strategy that emphasizes defeating Hamas on the battlefield before considering any political resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the country would continue to appropriate land in Gaza as long as Hamas holds hostages. Additionally, Israeli officials have expressed support for the complete dismantlement of Hamas’s remaining infrastructure, including tunnels and weapon stockpiles, even if it results in prolonged military engagement and increased civilian casualties.

This renewed strategy is reportedly motivated by U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to escalate ammunition support to Israel and his administration's encouragement for Netanyahu to adopt a more aggressive stance against Hamas.

In a recent statement regarding the resumption of ground operations in Gaza, Netanyahu’s office declared that “Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength.”

The new offensive is characterized as a reaction to the Palestinian group's “refusal to release hostages” and its rejection of proposals to extend the ceasefire.

In response, Hamas has claimed that Israel “unilaterally” ended the ceasefire, as reported by Reuters.

Palestinian authorities indicated on Sunday that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 50,000 since hostilities erupted approximately 18 months ago.

The conflict between Hamas and Israel escalated dramatically following a surprise cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 fatalities and the capture of about 250 hostages.
