Israel Planning Invasion of Lebanon, Reports Say
A senior US official confirmed to ABC News that the Israel Defense Force (IDF) is planning to enter southern Lebanon soon. While the US outlet labeled the potential operation as “very limited,” specific details regarding its execution or timing were not disclosed.

On Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi made an announcement regarding a possible ground operation in Lebanon during his talk with troops stationed at Israel’s northern border. He stated that recent airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon were primarily conducted to prepare the area “for the possibility of your entry.”

Halevi indicated that efforts are ongoing to facilitate the return of displaced residents from northern regions to their homes. “To do this, we are preparing the [ground] maneuver,” he explained, although he did not provide a time frame for the operation.

“You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure,” Halevi emphasized, mentioning that Hezbollah has allegedly converted villages into “large military outposts, with underground infrastructure, staging points, and launch pads into our territory.”

Over the past year, Israel and Hezbollah have engaged in sporadic exchanges of fire, with Hezbollah supporting the Palestinian cause amid West Jerusalem’s military operations against Hamas.

Earlier this month, West Jerusalem significantly intensified its campaign against the Shia militia, resulting in thousands of injuries due to a sabotage operation targeting Hezbollah’s handheld communication devices, followed by airstrikes on southern Lebanon. According to Lebanese health authorities, these Israeli attacks have resulted in at least 1,300 deaths.

The ABC report surfaced just one day after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in a significant Israeli airstrike aimed at what was described as the group’s main headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs. The militia confirmed Nasrallah’s death on Saturday morning but has not yet named a successor.

Later on Saturday, West Jerusalem announced that nearly all of Hezbollah’s military leaders had been eliminated and provided a list of a dozen top commanders killed over the preceding weeks.

Washington responded to Nasrallah’s death, describing it as “a measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.” The US reaffirmed its full support for West Jerusalem’s “right to defend itself” while also expressing a desire to “de-escalate” the conflict.

In contrast, Russia condemned the Israeli attacks in Lebanon, cautioning that such actions could potentially lead to a “big war” across the entire Middle East.
