Israel Emerges as Major Victor in Syria, According to Putin
Moscow has firmly denounced the seizure of any Syrian territory in light of the ongoing crisis, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In his remarks regarding the situation in Syria, particularly following the Israeli army's incursion after the fall of Bashar Assad's government, Putin identified Israel as the main beneficiary of the destabilization. Speaking at his annual end-of-the-year press conference on Thursday, he expressed that while Israel's concerns for national security are understandable, Russia's stance is clear: "Russia condemns the seizure of any Syrian territories." He further asserted, "This is obvious. Our position here is firm."

Putin acknowledged Israel's need to address its national security but expressed hope that West Jerusalem would eventually withdraw its forces from Syrian territory. Nonetheless, he observed that Israel continues to send more troops across the border, raising concerns about intentions to occupy the Golan Heights.

Highlighting the complexity of the situation, Putin mentioned that the local population has recently submitted a request to be annexed to Israel. He remarked that this introduces a new dimension to the conflict and emphasized that the issue of Syria's disintegration must be resolved in accordance with the UN charter, which upholds nations' rights to self-determination.

Since the collapse of the Assad regime, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes against various targets in Syria and has advanced its military presence beyond the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel cannot permit jihadi groups to exploit the power vacuum along the Syrian border, posing a threat to Israeli communities in the Golan Heights. In response, the Israeli government has approved a plan to double the Jewish population in the Golan Heights and bolster the region, with Netanyahu asserting, "We will continue to hold onto it, cause it to blossom, and settle in it."
