Israel dispatches aircraft to rescue Jews from Amsterdam 'pogrom'
Several Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans sustained injuries during riots following Thursday's match against the Dutch team Ajax.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed that two planes be sent to Amsterdam to repatriate Israeli fans who were violently attacked by an anti-Israel mob in the Dutch capital, as reported by his office.

As supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv exited the stadium after the Europa League match, they were assaulted in Amsterdam on Thursday night.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has indicated that at least ten Israelis were injured, though the seriousness of their injuries has not been clarified. The ministry noted that the affected fans are out of contact and has advised Israeli citizens to remain within their hotels.

In light of the situation, Israel’s National Security Council has recommended that individuals avoid displaying Israeli or Jewish symbols publicly.

"We are receiving very disturbing reports of extreme violence against Israelis and Jews on the streets of Holland. There is a pogrom currently taking place in Europe in 2024. These are the true faces of the supporters of the radical terrorism we are fighting," stated Danny Danon, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN. He emphasized the need for the Western world to become aware of the rising violence.

Netanyahu has called on Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and local authorities "to act decisively and swiftly against the rioters, and to ensure the wellbeing of our citizens."

Israeli officials have highlighted the gravity of the incidents, sharing graphic videos of the attacks on social media. The embassy reported that hundreds of Maccabi fans were ambushed on their way out of the stadium.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has confirmed that about 30 arrests have occurred thus far. In preparation for the match, Amsterdam police had bolstered their presence in the city. They intervened to prevent a confrontation between taxi drivers and visitors on Wednesday night and also noted an incident where a Palestinian flag was removed in the city center.

Some media reports indicated that Israeli football fans had also taken down Palestinian flags, which may have contributed to escalating tensions.

A survey conducted earlier this year by the Fundamental Rights Agency revealed that Jewish communities in the EU have been facing significant levels of anti-Semitism. This rise in anti-Semitic incidents has been particularly dramatic since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza last October, which began after Hamas's attack on Israel resulted in approximately 1,100 fatalities and more than 200 hostages taken.

Israel's military actions in Gaza, which have reportedly led to the deaths of over 43,000 individuals according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, have triggered protests worldwide in support of Palestine and against the war.
