Huawei introduces Mate XT, the first tri-fold smartphone in the world
Huawei has unveiled the Mate XT, making it the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. This innovative device features a unique design that allows it to fold in multiple directions, setting it apart in the competitive smartphone market.
The announcement was made just hours after Apple, a key competitor from the U.S., launched its iPhone 16 series. Both the Mate XT and the iPhone 16 are scheduled to begin shipping on September 20.
As per the information available on Huawei's website, the Mate XT had already garnered over 3 million preorders at the time this information was released.
Huawei's executive director, Yu Chengdong, described the Mate XT as having a 10.2-inch screen when fully unfolded, and a thickness of just 3.6 millimeters, positioning it as the thinnest and largest folding screen phone currently available. This slender design was made possible by integrating a high-capacity battery that uses the thinnest silicon anode material found worldwide, allowing for a battery cell thickness of just 1.9 millimeters.
The phone also features an aspect ratio of 16:11, providing a similar viewing experience to that of a typical laptop screen. This design greatly minimizes the black bars seen during the playback of standard 16:9 widescreen videos that are common on the more square-like screens of other foldable phones currently widespread.
Huawei's Guo Tianxiang, a research manager at IDC China, commented, "In terms of software compatibility, Huawei is already the best in the folding phone market. The battery has seen considerable improvement in both capacity and size due to the use of silicon carbide anode, but attention must still be paid to power consumption and heat issues."
The Mate XT allows for a flexible user experience with its single, dual, and triple screen modes, making transitions between each seamless. Yu pointed out that Huawei has invested five years into developing a unique hinge mechanism for this purpose, setting new benchmarks for the functionality of foldable designs.
However, analysts have noted that traditional issues with folding phones, such as creases in the screen cover, still remain. They also mentioned that the substantial 10-inch screen could significantly impact the device's battery life.
Starting at 19,999 yuan, the Mate XT has stirred debates on social media over the hefty price tag and the practicality of owning a phone with such a large screen.
