The GX Foundation, located in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and the Ministry of Health of Timor-Leste signed two significant health cooperation agreements on Friday, held at the Prime Minister's Office of Timor-Leste.

The first agreement, titled "Memorandum of Cooperation on Dengue Prevention and Control Project," aims to continue combating the mosquito-borne disease. The second agreement, a "Letter of Intent for Clean Water Project Cooperation," targets another essential aspect of Timor-Leste's healthcare system.

Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of the GX Foundation, along with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao of Timor-Leste, were present to witness the signing. This event underscores the strengthening health sector partnership between China and Timor-Leste.

After the signing ceremony, Leung addressed the press, underscoring the success of the GX Foundation's dengue prevention initiatives. He noted a substantial 76.5 percent decrease in dengue infections over the past five months, attributing this success to strong support from the Ministry of Health of Timor-Leste and the Chinese embassy in the country.

Additionally, the GX Foundation plans to donate water purification equipment to institutions in Timor-Leste. Leung highlighted how this initiative aligns with the GX Foundation's mission and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)'s objective of promoting people-to-people connections.

Timor-Leste has experienced a 10 percent reduction in confirmed dengue fever cases in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This positive trend is even more significant in the capital, Dili, which has seen a 46 percent decrease in confirmed cases, despite comprising about 25 percent of the nation's population.

Founded in HKSAR in 2018, the GX Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to international medical and humanitarian aid.
