Hezbollah promises 'reckoning' with Israel following pager assaults
A series of devastating explosions in the Middle East has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and inflicted injuries on approximately 3,000 others.

The Lebanon-based Islamist group Hezbollah has announced it will respond to Israel following a series of pager explosions that killed several of its members and injured thousands on Tuesday. The explosions primarily struck Lebanon and Syria, impacting facilities that use pagers as a communication tool, a method preferred by Hezbollah for its perceived security benefits.

Among those injured were Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amini, and several senior Hezbollah officials. Although there are allegations pointing towards Israeli involvement, specifically implicating Mossad, Israel has not acknowledged any role in these incidents.

Hezbollah issued a public statement on Wednesday, asserting, "the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression." The organization further declared its intent to press on with its military activities against Israel, indicating that these attacks would not deter its support for Hamas in Gaza.

“This path is continuous and separate from the difficult reckoning that the criminal enemy must await for its massacre on Tuesday… This is another reckoning that will come,” Hezbollah declared, emphasizing that the assault would only harden its determination.

According to a report by The New York Times, which quoted sources briefed on the situation, it was suggested that the explosives might have been concealed within pagers bearing the logo of Taiwanese company Gold Apollo. This company confirmed the usage of its brand name but indicated the actual manufacturing was done by a firm based in Budapest.

In light of potential security breaches through more modern communication technologies, Hezbollah has historically opted for pagers and similar low-tech devices to reduce the risk of interception by Israeli intelligence.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, both of which maintain a close alliance with Iran, has been ongoing over the years. It intensified with last October’s commencement of the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to periodic cross-border skirmishes that have resulted in numerous casualties. Until now, these encounters have stopped short of scaling into a full-scale direct conflict.
