US Vice President Kamala Harris holds a narrow advantage over Republican rival Donald Trump in a national presidential poll released on Tuesday. This poll is among the first conducted since US President Joe Biden withdrew from his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris as his successor.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that Harris has a two-point lead over Trump, 44% to 42%, which falls within the margin of error. In the previous week's poll, both Harris, 59, and Trump, now 78, were tied at 44%.
This new poll was conducted over the two days following Biden's Sunday announcement that he was exiting the race and endorsing Harris. It also came on the heels of the Republican National Convention, where Trump formally accepted the nomination.
Biden announced his departure from the race amidst growing concerns among Democrats about his declining health and his perceived capability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.
Harris, whose campaign asserts that she has already secured the Democratic nomination, has been amassing donations and endorsements, setting a new fundraising record with $81 million in contributions within the first 24 hours after Biden’s withdrawal.
A pollster from Trump’s campaign played down the polling results, suggesting that Harris’ lead was due to extensive media coverage of her candidacy and the enthusiasm among Democratic voters following the shakeup in the race.
"That bump is likely to start showing itself over the next few days and will last for a while," Reuters quoted pollster Tony Fabrizio as saying.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll results also supported Biden’s decision to withdraw, with 56% of registered voters agreeing that Harris was "mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges," compared to 49% who said the same of Trump.
Other polls conducted after Biden’s announcement revealed that Harris was performing better than Biden but still trailed behind the former president. The Morning Consult poll showed Harris trailing Trump by two percentage points, 47% to 45%, within the margin of error.
In a PBS News/NPR/Marist poll conducted on Monday, Trump led Harris with 46% to 45% of registered voters.
