US Vice President Kamala Harris has pledged that the United States will “stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies” if she secures the presidency in the upcoming November election.
In her keynote address on the last day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Thursday, the party’s presidential nominee highlighted her commitment to “strengthen, not abdicate our global leadership.”
Harris spoke about her efforts to assist President Biden in uniting Western nations to provide military aid and financial support to Kyiv.
Moscow regards Ukraine's desire to join NATO as a primary factor in the current crisis, viewing this ambition as a threat to its national security.
Recently, Harris, who was selected as her party's nominee last month, accused her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, of having “encouraged” Moscow by allegedly stating that “Russia could ‘do whatever the hell they want’ five days before” the conflict erupted in February 2022.
This comment appears to stem from a speech Trump delivered at a campaign rally in South Carolina earlier this year, where he recalled a conversation he had as president with a leader from a European NATO ally. The official expressed concerns about US support in the event of a Russian attack, given that their country was not meeting NATO's defense spending targets. Trump mentioned that he had threatened to abandon “delinquent” members of the US-led alliance in such a situation.
On Wednesday, during a campaign event in North Carolina, Trump suggested that Harris had met with Russian President Vladimir Putin three days prior to the escalation of the Ukraine crisis into open conflict. He asked, “Do you think she did a good job? She met with Putin to tell him ‘Don’t do it’, and three days later he attacked.”
Harris did travel to Europe in February 2022 to engage with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, a detail she referenced in her DNC speech. However, there is no evidence that she ever met with Putin.
The US government alleges that Moscow is supporting Trump against Harris through “influence operations” online, while senior Russian officials contend that neither candidate would significantly alter the US's adversarial stance towards Russia.
Moscow’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, asserted on Thursday that Russia “doesn’t interfere in any [US] internal affairs,” adding that the US has not provided evidence of any interference in its elections.
