Greta Thunberg Taken into Custody at Pro-Palestinian Demonstration
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Copenhagen, according to reports from local media referencing the event's organizers.

At 21 years old, Thunberg is no stranger to being removed by the police from various protests across different nations. This time, she was caught up in a protest at the University of Copenhagen, where she and other demonstrators were occupying an administrative building.

The demonstrators, identified as members of the 'Students Against the Occupation' group, were advocating for the university to cease academic cooperation with Israeli universities. They shared a message on Instagram stating, “while the situation in Palestine only gets worse, the University of Copenhagen continues cooperation with academic institutions in Israel,” highlighting their motive for the protest.

During the event, law enforcement detained a total of six individuals from approximately 20 participants, although a police spokesperson declined to confirm the identities of the arrested to AFP. Nevertheless, a representative from the student group acknowledged that Thunberg was among those detained.

Greta Thunberg was seen being led to a police van while restrained, wearing a black-and-white keffiyeh shawl, based on images and footage circulated on the social media platform X.

Before her arrest, Thunberg had updated her Instagram, reporting that police had forcefully entered the building, and that arrests were made using assault rifles.

The arrest gained considerable attention online, with many sharing visuals of the incident across social platforms.

Following the incident, Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet reported that Thunberg was taken in for questioning but was subsequently released. She, along with five other students, faces charges of trespassing.

The recent period has seen an upsurge in campus protests globally in relation to the Palestinian cause, with calls to sever ties with Israeli enterprises and boycott supporters of Israel's military actions in Gaza.

This episode isn't Thunberg's initial engagement with the Gaza conflict; she has previously expressed solidarity with Palestinians and criticized Israeli policies. An op-ed by Thunberg labeled Israeli actions as “war crimes” and “genocide,” and she voiced support for widespread pro-Palestine demonstrations earlier this year in Sweden.
