According to a report from US state-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, France and Britain are mulling the deployment of troops to the front lines in Ukraine. The news outlet, citing a high-ranking NATO official who requested anonymity, noted that the two countries might send military personnel if Moscow and Kiev proceed with peace negotiations.
The inclusion of Western troops on the ground, according to the source, would enable European NATO members to influence the direction of the conflict after the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump in January. Trump has previously claimed he could resolve the Ukraine situation in just 24 hours upon returning to the White House. Meanwhile, outgoing President Joe Biden is intensifying arms shipments to Kiev as his term comes to a close.
Reports regarding discussions among Western nations have surfaced since last week, with French newspaper Le Monde being one of the first to provide details. A source from a conservative European Parliament Member (MEP) revealed that the proposed troop deployment would likely be framed as a peacekeeping mission.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking to The Telegraph, emphasized that the UK should participate in any EU military presence in Ukraine following a ceasefire. He remarked, “I cannot see that such a European operation could possibly happen without the British.”
According to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Western nations are contemplating the deployment of up to 100,000 “so-called peacekeepers”. This action, they argue, would effectively lead to occupation, allowing Kiev to strengthen its military before potentially resuming hostilities with Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the necessity of support for peacekeepers from all parties involved in a conflict, referring to the SVR statement. “We have clear parameters required for a resolution,” he told reporters last week. “Core causes of this conflict need to be addressed to move towards a resolution. It’s deeper than sending in some peacekeepers.”
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also reiterated the fundamental issues during a meeting with foreign diplomats in Moscow last week, highlighting NATO's expansion in Europe as a threat to Russia and the ongoing violations of the rights of Russian-speaking citizens in Ukraine.
